Oswald the Lucky Rabbit made his screen debut in the 1927 short Trolley Troubles. Walt Disney and his animation team produced a series of Oswald cartoons for Universal in 1927 and 1928. The character's ownership remained with Universal after that original production deal ended, and Disney created Mickey Mouse soon afterward.
The Walt Disney Company regained the rights to Oswald in 2006. Since his return, the character has appeared in the Epic Mickey games, merchandise, restored short-film collections, and a new hand-drawn Disney Animation short released for Disney's 100th anniversary. These projects make it possible to follow both the silent-era character and his modern return.
Oswald will next lead a live-action and animation hybrid series created by Jon Favreau. The story begins when an earthquake releases Oswald from the place where he has been hidden since the 1920s, and a middle school student and his friends help him understand the modern world. The series is scheduled to premiere on Disney+ on February 17, 2027. The story below follows confirmed footage, cast details, and release updates.
