We Are Aliens

We Are Aliens is an original Japanese animated feature written and directed by Kōhei Kadowaki. Tsubasa, a quiet third-grader who struggles to fit in, becomes close friends with his outgoing classmate Gyotaro. One careless moment changes their relationship and the social world around them. The film follows the consequences through adolescence and adulthood, with a new trailer also highlighting Tsubasa’s connection to classmate Konatsu. Ryota Bando voices Tsubasa and Amane Okayama voices Gyotaro. Japanese promotional materials name Ten Yamazaki as the voice of Konatsu. The 117-minute film combines hand-drawn 2D animation and rotoscoping. It screened at Cannes Directors’ Fortnight and was selected for the Annecy feature competition in 2026; those are selections, not award wins. NOTHING NEW is behind the project. The Japanese cinema opening is September 25, 2026, and the Japanese Film Festival Australia lists later screenings in several cities. No U.S. streaming date is confirmed.
